PREVIOUSLY ON 24:
(DAVID PALMER looks at his hand. It has been in contact with an acid and his skin is peeling away. He falls to the ground, everyone around starts screaming.)
FADE OUT
Caption appears on the screen: THREE YEARS LATER.
JACK BAUER (voice over): The following takes place between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Events occur in real time.
FADE OUT
EXT. STREETS OF LOS ANGELES
(A van is driving through Los Angeles. Inside some MEN are preparing a bomb. They pull up at the National Health Services, roll the body of a dead man onto the ground and place the bomb against the entrance door. The bomb explodes as they drive away. A SECURITY GUARD comes to the blown off door and sees the decomposed body.)
SECURITY GUARD (into radio): Security, I need help here at the ramp…
INT. FEDERAL HOLDING FACILITY IN DOWNEY
(JACK BAUER enters the federal holding facility in Downey, with his partner CHASE EDMUNDS. Their hands are scanned to identify them. Mean while, a prisoner, RAMON SALAZAR, is being walked from his cell to an interview room. JACK BAUER sneezes.)
CHASE EDMUNDS: You Ok Jack?
JACK BAUER: I won't be ok 'till we get this thing signed.
CHASE EDMUNDS: That's not what I meant.
(RAMON SLAZAR is sat down in the interview room. Outside the room, JACK BAUER and CHASE EDMUNDS walk up to a group of men.)
ANNICON: Ok, we're all here.
JACK BAUER: What kind of changes are we talking about?
ANNICON: Don't worry Jack, we're not deal-breakers. He's still give up all the terrorist cells he deals with. He just wants to go to a class two detention, not maximum security.
JACK BAUER: And you're gonna give it to him, right?
ANNICON: Yeah.
RAMON SALAZAR'S LAWYER: My client's not happy that you won't hold him in Florida.
ANNICON: He's getting a new cell, that's the deal.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Give him Florida, that doesn't make a difference.
ANNICON: I let you two do your jobs, why don't you let me do mine?
JACK BAUER: Because we don't want this thing going south over some small detail. Salazar's unstable and we can't predict what's going to push his buttons, and to be frank, there's too much at stake.
ANNICON: Listen Jack, I know you two spent the last year getting Salazar and I respect that, but there's a protocol that I have to follow…
JACK BAUER (interrupting): Luis, come here for a second.
(JACK BAUER pulls ANNICON to the side.)
JACK BAUER: Putting him away is not the point here, if he doesn't talk, we haven't accomplished anything. I didn't loose a year of my life to arrest some drug dealer. Salazar does business with terrorist cells around the world, bringing them down is our only objective here, are we clear?
ANNICON: I understand, but if you give him everything he asks for, he's just gonna want more. This is the deal, and he's going to take it.
JACK BAUER: You better be right.
(A HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER enters the interview room, holding a file.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Is that my life you're holding in your hand?
HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER: It's ready to be signed.
HECTOR SALAZAR (looking at the one-way mirror.): Are you in there Jack?
HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER: Forget about Bauer.
HECTOR SALAZAR: I'm can not forget about the man who put me here. Pretended to be my friend
(HECTOR SALAZAR gets up and walks to the one-way mirror.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: I'm concerned about you Jack. The things you did to get me here I wouldn't wish on anyone. Let's face it, you'll never be the same. Hey, you'd be lying. So I guess we are in the same boat. I'm about to name names Jack, it is a big moment for both of us. That makes me happy, because you see, we are connected now. I don't know, maybe we always have been.
HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER: Hey, mark the changes.
HECTOR SALAZAR: I don't need to see the changes. But I do need the pen, unless you want me to sign it with my own blood. (laughing) Hehehe. It's kind of funny, my own blood…
(HECTOR SALAZAR is handed a pen.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Where do I sign this thing?
HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER (pointing to paper): Right here.
(HECTOR SALAZAR signs the paper.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: You've done a good job as my council. In a go to guy as they like to say here in the States. I think they're on to you, and I don't think you have what it takes to keep your mouth shut.
HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER: What do you mean?
JACK BAUER: Son of a bitch!
(RAMON SALAZAR stabs the HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER in the neck with his pen.)
JACK BAUER: Open the door, open the door! Do it now!
(RAMON SALAZAR is pulled back by SECURITY GUARDS.)
ANNICON: Get a medic in here, now!
RAMON SALAZAR: It's your fault Jack. What happens next is on you.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Huh? Is that right? Is that a threat? Son of a bitch. Back off!
(CHASE EDMUNDS lunges at RAMON SALAZAR.)
JACK BAUER (to CHASE EDMUNDS): Take a walk.
RAMON SALAZAR (to JACK BAUER): Did you hear me? Did you hear me? What happens next is on you Jack. It's on you!
EXT. NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICES
(A HAZMAT team is encasing the body.)
HAZMAT TEAM MEMBER: Doctor Macer, we isolated the body like you asked.
SUNNY MACER: You said my name was on it?
HAZMAT TEAM MEMBER: Yes, it's on his chest.
(SUNNY MACER walks up to the body and looks at the body. Her name is written on duct tape wrapped around the chest of the body.)
SUNNY MACER: Run a full panel of tests just to be sure but I think we're dealing with a pneumonic virus, type three.
HAZMAT TEAM MEMBER: Type three? Isn't that the virus group your team has been doing simulations on?
SUNNY MACER: Yeah, I think that's why this was addressed to me. Has CTU been contacted yet?
HAZMAT TEAM MEMBER: No, we've been waiting for you.
SUNNY MACER: Go ahead and start the preliminary tests, I'll call Director Almeida.
HAZMAT TEAM MEMBER: Alright.
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(TONY ALMEIDA walks up to MICHELLE DESSLER.)
TONY ALMEIDA/ Hey, the President arrived at SE yet?
MICHELLE DESSLER: Just about. We're swapping out some of our people down to the Secret Services in place. They're waiting for your resource assessment.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright, I'll call them.
ADAM KAUFMAN: I've had it Tony, I swear to God
TONY ALMEIDA: What's the problem?
ADAM KAUFMAN: Chloe O'Brian does not touch my data. If Field Ops wants something, she asks Jack, or talks to you, and then you tell me.
TONY ALMEIDA: Did she damage anything?
ADAM KAUFMAN: That's not the point. The reason my department has zero down-time is because of the procedures I put in place.
TONY ALMEIDA: Did she damage anything?
ADAM KAUFMAN: No she didn't, but…
TONY ALMEIDA: Then let it go. Jack's got his department and I've got mine, but we're all under the same roof, understood? Good. Lighten up. You're gonna drive yourself and the rest of us crazy.
(TONY ALMEIDA walks up to MICHELLE DESSLER, who is on the phone.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: Alright, hold on. (MICHELLE DESSLER hangs up the phone and looks up at TONY ALMEIDA.) Sunny Macer from Health Services on the line. Oh, uh, by the way, have you heard from Hertop?
TONY ALMEIDA: No, not yet. Relax Michelle, you're gonna get the job.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Well I'd better, you're not going to Langley without me.
(TONY ALMEIDA picks up the phone.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Hey Sunny, what's up?
SUNNY MACER: Well this is one I'm really sorry to be right about.
TONY ALMEIDA: What are you talking about?
SUNNY MACER: Cordilla virus. It's a type three pneumonic virus. Remember last month at the conference I raised the possibility a strain could be out there.
TONY ALMEIDA: Yeah… SUNNY MACER: Well it is. Someone just dropped of a dead body infected with a virus. Tony, these guys are serious. They blew a hole in a door to get our attention. This is obviously some kind of message.
TONY ALMEIDA: A message? What, that somebody's got the virus and they're willing to release it?
SUNNY MACER: Yeah, exactly.
TONY ALMEIDA: Do we need to issue a quarantine advisor?
SUNNY MACER: No, once the host is dead, it's not contagious.
TONY ALMEIDA: Right, do me a favour, call the other county facilities, see if there are any more cases.
SUNNY MACER: I will, what about the ID on the John Doe.
TONY ALMEIDA: Send everything you've got over here. We'll work it up.
SUNNY MACER: It's on it's way.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright, thanks Sunny.
(TONY ALMEIDA hangs up.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: What is it?
TONY ALMEIDA: Initiate a level one setting protocol.
(MICHELLE DESSLER walks away.)
INT. FEDERAL HOLDING FACILITY IN DOWNEY
(JACK BAUER, CHASE EDMUNDS and ANNICON are analysing the security footage from the interrogation room.
RAMON SALAZAR: And I don't think you have what it takes to keep your mouth shut.
HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER: What do you mean?
The video shows RAMON SALAZAR stabbing HOLDING FACILITY STAFF MEMBER with a pen.)
JACK BAUER: If Salazar wanted to kill Shay he could have done it anytime in the last three months, why did he pick today?
ANNICON: He's cutting his deal.
JACK BAUER: Maybe, but I don't think so.
(On the video RAMON SALAZAR: This is your fault Jack, whatever happens next is on you.)
ANNICON: What happens next…
(JACK BAUER picks up the phone and dials a number.)
CTU RECEPTIONIST: CTU.
JACK BAUER: This is Bauer, patch me through to Almeida.
CTU RECEPTIONIST: Hold on.
TONY ALMEIDA: Hey Jack.
JACK BAUER: Tony, is anything going on down there?
TONY ALMEIDA: We just had a major protocol come in, possible bio-threat to the city.
JACK BAUER: Tell me about it.
TONY ALMEIDA: Well a dead body infected with the Cordilla virus was left at Health Services. We figure it's just the first shoe dropping, we're waiting for somebody to take responsibility.
(Pause.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Jack?
JACK BAUER: Yeah.
TONY ALMEIDA: You thinking this is connected to Salazar?
JACK BAUER (agitated): I don't know. I don't know, maybe. Look, I'll get back to you.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright.
(They both hang up.)
JACK BAUER: I need a copy of all four images.
ANNICON: Right away.
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 01:14:03 to 01:14:08 before fading away.)
EXT. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
(DAVID PALMER'S limousine arrives outside the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA and is greeted by news reporters and a cheering crowd.)
WAYNE PALMER: Hello Mr President.
DAVID PALMER: Wayne, are we ready for the run-through?
WAYNE PALMER: Yeah, almost. The advanced team dropped the ball so we can't get in there for a few minutes.
DAVID PALMER: That's fine.
WAYNE PALMER: No, no it's not fine David, I fired Judy, it was her fault.
DAVID PALMER: She's done some good work for us hasn't she?
WAYNE PALMER: Listen, tonight's debate is critical, and she should have had every single base covered but she didn't.
(DAVID PALMER turns around and waves to the media.)
REPORTER 1: Mr President, how do you feel about tonight's debate with Senator Keeler?
DAVID PALMER: Confident, ready to go.
REPORTER 2: Sir, this is your first time back to Los Angeles since the attempt on your life. Were you uneasy about coming back?
DAVID PALMER: Not at all. Los Angeles is a great city. I would have been back here sooner if events had allowed it. What is important is that we're here now, looking to the future.
(All the REPORTERS start calling out to DAVID PALMER.)
WAYNE PALMER: Thank you, that's all for now. I'll form a Q and A letter this afternoon, you'll be briefed. (to DAVID PALMER) David, we've got to talk about those GAO numbers. I mean, Keeler's gonna bring it up tonight, you know he is, and I'm just not really…
(DAVID PALMER is holding his stomach and seems short of breath.)
WAYNE PALMER: David, David you alright?
DAVID PALMER: I'm fine.
WAYNE PALMER: Let me call one of the resident doctors, ok?
DAVID PALMER: No, it's alright. I'll wait for Anne.
(They both walk inside.)
INT. FEDERAL HOLDING FACILITY IN DOWNEY
(JACK BAUER and CHASE EDMUNDS are leaving the holding facility. ANNICON runs out after them.)
ANNICON: Where you going Jack? We have to talk about this.
JACK BAUER: Not now.
ANNICON: Then when?
JACK BAUER: Call me. Right now we gotta get back to CTU.
ANNICON: Why?
JACK BAUER: Salazar killed Shay for a reason. He picked today to do it and we gotta find out why.
ANNICON: Fine, let's just go back in here and put the screws on Salazar.
JACK BAUER: You think he's gonna talk to us after what we just watched him do? Not a chance. (to CHASE EDMUNDS.) Come on, let's go.
(JACK BAUER and CHASE EDMUNDS climb into their black SUV.)
ANNICON: Jack…
JACK BAUER: Just call me.
(JACK BAUER and CHASE EDMUNDS drive away.)
CHASE EDMUNDS: Alright, so what else did Almeida say about this dead body?
(Pause.)
CHASE EDMUNDS: Jack!
JACK BAUER: What?
CHASE EDMUNDS: I asked you about Tony, what else did he say?
JACK BAUER: He said the body was dumped at Health Services. They're trying to ID it.
CHASE EDMUNDS: You know you never answered me before, about how you're doing.
JACK BAUER: What are you talking about?
CHASE EDMUNDS: You know what I'm talking about.
(JACK BAUER'S mobile phone rings. He picks up.)
JACK BAUER: This is Bauer.
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Jack, it's Chloe. I have Kate Warner for you, shall I put her through?
JACK BAUER: Uh, yeah, put her through.
KATE WARNER: Jack?
JACK BAUER: Hi Kate.
KATE WARNER: I just wanted to let you know, I found that leather jacket you thought you'd lost.
JACK BAUER: Oh, ok, great.
KATE WARNER: So, uh, what do you wanna do? I could bring it over, or send it.
JACK BAUER: Oh, you don't have to do that, look, I'll just send someone over to pick it up.
KATE WARNER: You sure?
JACK BAUER: Yeah.
KATE WARNER: Ok then.
JACK BAUER: Kate, how are you?
KATE WARNER: You know it's hard. I miss you.
JACK BAUER: I'm really really sorry.
KATE WARNER: Don't be.
JACK BAUER: Take care of yourself Kate.
KATE WARNER: Bye.
(JACK BAUER hangs up.)
CHASE EDMUNDS: How's Kate?
JACK BAUER: She's alright.
CHASE EDMUNDS: So you guys are still talking?
JACK BAUER: No, not really.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Alright. None of my business. Sorry.
JACK BAUER: It's not like that, she's just trying to return a couple of things of mine that's all. You got any water.
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(TONY ALMEIDA is at MICHELLE DESSLER'S desk, talking to her.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Talk to Sunny, she's gonna check with the other facilities and see if there are any more cases. If there are, find out where. Also, let's take all the regional cells that have bio-terrorist capabilities and put them in the high speed cache.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Ok.
(The phone rings.)
CTU RECEPTIONISTS: Tony, it's Larry Hertzog from Langley on line two.
(TONY ALMEIDA picks up the phone.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Hey there.
(LARRY HERTZOG is speaking down the phone. We can't hear what he's saying.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Yeah, we are.
(LARRY HERTZOG continues.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Uh huh
(LARRY HERTZOG continues.)
TONY ALMEIDA: Uh huh. Yeah I will. Thanks.
(TONY ALMEIDA hangs up the phone.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: Was that about me?
TONY ALMEIDA: Yeah… He doesn't have a job for you right now. There's no new funding until after the election.
MICHELLE DESSLER (sighing): I see.
TONY ALMEIDA: Also, uh, Larry told me that he needs an answer from me by the end of the day. Then they're hiring to fill the post.
MICHELLE DESSLER: We both know you can't pass this up, it's a major career move. Call him and tell him it's yes.
TONY ALMEIDA: And you'll come along as the wife, without a job?
MICHELLE DESSLER: I'll go anywhere with you, so long as I don't have to cook.
TONY ALMEIDA: Sweetheart, if you promise not to cook I'll take you with me anywhere, but if they don't have a job for you, I'm not interested.
(The phone rings.)
CTU RECPETIONIST: Tony, Homeland Security on line one.
MICHELLE DESSLER: We'll talk about it later.
(TONY ALMEIDA picks up the phone.)
TONY ALEMIDA: Almeida.
(MICHELLE DESSLER walks down to KIM BAUER'S desk. She is on the phone.)
KIM BAUER: Pretty much, I just need to refresh the data on my panel. Thanks.
(KIM BAUER hangs up the phone.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: Hey, Kim?
KIM BAUER: Yes Michelle.
MICHELLE DESSLER: You ever done a capability search?
KIM BAUER: Couple of weeks ago I did one for Tony.
MICHELLE DESSLER: The East European cells?
KIM BAUER: Yes.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Good. This one's different, it's gonna be global. Here's my access code.
KIM BAUER: I'll get right on it.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Thanks.
(KIM BAUER starts typing on her computer. She looks up.)
KIM BAUER: Hey Adam, does the link file have DES incriptions?
ADAM: No, it's two-key.
KIM BAUER: What volume was the filter on?
ADAM: Eight two seven.
KIM BAUER: Thank you.
ADAM: You're welcome.
EXT. RANCH IN LOS NIEVES, NORTHERN MEXICO
HECTOR SALAZAR and CLAUDIA are watching a trainer and his horse.)
HECTOR SALAZAR (in Spanish): He's feisty.
TRAINER (in Spanish): Yes, he might not be ready.
HECTOR SALAZAR (in Spanish): He's ready. You can see it in his eyes. (to CLAUDIA, about the horse) He reminds me of you.
CLAUDIA: Are you saying you had to break me?
HECTOR SALAZAR: No, it was you who break me.
(HECTOR SALAZAR and CLAUDIA smile and embrace. HECTOR SALAZAR'S phone rings.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Qué mas?
GAEL: Tienen el cuerpo ("They have the body.")
HECTOR SALAZAR: Are they aware of what they're dealing with yet?
GAEL: I'm sure they are.
HECTOR SALAZAR: Give it about ten more minutes to trickle into the system, then make the call.
GAEL: Sí señor.
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(MICHELLE DESSLER is talking into the phone, looking at a fax machine.)
MICHELE DESSLER: Ok, it's coming through now. Thanks Chris.
(MICHELLE DESSLER hangs up the phone.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: Adam, I'm hyping this over to your system.
ADAM: What is it?
MICHELLE DESSLER: Brags on the body that was dropped off at Health Services. We're doing an ID analysis. (to KIM BAUER) Kim, where are you on the capability search?
KIM BAUER: Still running it, it's gonna be another fifteen minutes.
MICHELLE DESSLER: So you're open?
KIM BAUER: Yeah, what do you need?
MICHELEL DESSLER: Adam's gonna break of part of an ID, we need a name. (to ADAM) Give her the DNA file.
ADAM: Michelle, I don't need her help.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Yes you do. This is urgent.
(MICHELLE DESSLER walks away.)
KIM BAUER: I'm ready Adam, send the file. I'm open Adam, send me the file.
ADAM: No.
KIM BAUER: Michelle just told you…
ADAM: I don't need anyone doing my work for me.
KIM BAUER: What is your problem?
ADAM: My problem is that everyone in this place earned their job, you got it cos of your dad.
(KIM BAUER starts typing on her computer. A few seconds later, an error warning appears on ADAM'S screen saying "II RESPONSE TIMEOUT".)
ADAM: What the hell is this?
(ADAM picks up the phone and dials a number.)
ADAM: Tracy, is your system locked?
TRACEY: No, it's not.
(ADAM hangs up.)
KIM BAUER: You know it could be that you forgot to set the group permission, someone who knows the tree structure changed the ownership. That wouldn't be me cos I'm incompetent and only got this job because of my dad.
ADAM: Change the ownership back, Kim.
KIM BAUER: Send the data fork. It's your ass, Michelle's waiting.
ADAM: Fine, I'll send it, just unlock my system.
KIM BAUER: No problem.
(JACK BAUER and CHASE EDMUNDS walk into CTU.)
CHSAE EDMUNDS: Hey Jack, I'll be up in a minute.
JACK BAUER: Ok.
(JACK BAUER walks up the steps to his office.)
JACK BAUER: Chloe, what you got? Are we gonna sync with all the systems downstairs?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Everything Health Services sent on the body's in volume one and I've reprieved all the Salazar information.
JACK BAUER: Where are the date keys?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: I couldn't get those for you.
JACK BAUER: Why not?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: You'll have to talk to Tony, so that Tony can tell to Adam, and Adam can give them to me.
JACK BAUER: You're kidding right?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Nope, Adam's completely anal about that kind of stuff and he hates women.
JACK BAUER (looking distressed): Chloe, just get it for me ok, please? Close my door.
(CHLOE O'BRAIN leaves the office. JACK BAUER picks up a piece of paper. His hands are shaking, he throws it back onto the desk. He leans back in his chair. He is sweating and seems hurt. He leans over in his chair and groans. The phone rings.)
JACK BAUER: Yeah.
MICHELLE DESSLER: Jack, it's Michelle. The teleconference with Health Services is about to start, you might wanna come down.
JACK BAUER: Uh, no, I'm gonna stay up here, just patch them through, ok?
MICHELLE DESSLER: Ok.
JACK BAUER: Thanks.
(JACK BAUER hangs up the phone.)
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 01:26:50 to 01:14:57 before fading away.)
INT. CTU - OFFICE
(KIM BAUER walks into an empty office. CHASE EDMUNDS walks up behind her.)
KIM BAUER (laughing): Ah, you scared me.
CHASE EDMUNDS: What are you doing in here?
KIM BAUER: I am refreshing a drive. What's going on with Salazar? Were you there when it happened?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Yeah. It was pretty crazy.
KIM BAUER: How's my dad taking it?
CHASE EDMUNDS: He's ok.
KIM BAUER: Good, cos I was thinking about talking to him today.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Uh huh. Ok, today might not be the best day.
KIM BAUER: Chase, no day is a good day. We said that we would tell him if we were still together after two months, it's almost three. Why don't we just tell him and get it over with?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Alright, but I'll do it, ok?
KIM BAUER: Are you sure?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Yes, I'm sure.
KIM BAUER: Really?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Really.
(Two people walk into the office.)
CHASE EDMUNDS: Ok, look, you can't put the drives in there, what I need you to do is look under, uh…
KIM BAUER: F-6 right?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Yeah.
INT. CTU - CONFERENCE ROOM
(TONY ALMEIDA and MICHELLE DESSLER are sitting at the conference table. JKAC BAUER is listening on the phone. SUNNY MACER is on a live feed.)
SUNNY MACER: We just received results form our test Tony, unfortunately, the news isn't good. This is a weaponised strain, the virus has been engineered to kill more rapidly.
TONY ALMEIDA: How rapidly?
SUNNY MACER: It's a bit of a guess, but based on the autopsy, if the infection starts a T equals zero hours, there's a non-contagious latency period of fourteen hours. After fourteen it presents, after twenty the host is incapacitated, by twenty four the host is dead.
TONY ALMEIDA: What are epidemiological consequences?
SUNNY MACER: If the virus initiates at a single location, there will be a couple hundred cases by the end of day one. By the end of day two, it could be in the thousands, but from there it's easier to talk about in percentage of population. By the end of the first week, nine percent of Los Angeles County will be infected.
TONY ALMEIDA: Nine percent? That's over a million people.
SUNNY MACER: And those people will die within twenty four hours of infection.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright, so tell me, if someone were gonna try to release this virus in the general population, how would they do it?
SUNNY MACER: That's the million dollar question, it could come from anywhere. We don't know who has it, there's no way to know where they plan to release it, we don't even know what form it's in.
INT. KYLE SINGER'S HOUSE
(KYLE SINGER lifts a sack of cocaine out of a bag. He is about to open it when his MUM knocks on his door.)
KYLE'S MUM: Kyle?
KYLE: Hold on.
(KYLE puts away the bag of cocaine. KYLE'S MUM opens the doors)
KYLE'S MUM: Tim wants you to know that he's down at the pool.
KYLE: Thanks mum.
KYLE'S MUM: Can you take me to the doctor later on this afternoon?
KYLE: What's dad doing?
KYLE'S MUM: On a job interview, he was crossed.
KYLE: He was crossed… Can Aunt Norma take you?
KYLE'S MUM: Why, what's so important that you can't take me?
KYLE: Um, it's just that I've got a bunch of stuff to do today, mum. Sorry.
KYLE'S MUM: Fine, I'll call Norma.
KYLE: Hey, thanks. Bye mum.
(KYLE closes the door to his room.)
EXT. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
(DAVID PALMER is doing a run-through of tonight's debate.)
MAN: Mr President, the country was in shock after the attempt on your life but it's prayers were answered when it was clear that you would survive. That said, many Americans have expressed concern that you are not fully recovered and may not be strong enough to serve for four more years. How would you respond to those who make such claims?
DAVID PALMER: I wake up every morning at 5 a.m. I spend the first hour in the weight room, while I'm exercising, I'm prepping for my morning meetings, and then I put in a sixteen hour…
WAYNE PALMER: Hold on! Uh, can we pause the video please, get ready to play it back. Sorry Chuck, hold on. (to DAID PALMER) Don't dignify that question with a defensive response.
DAVID PALMER: I didn't realise that stating the facts was being defensive.
WAYNE PALMER: They bring up the assassination attempt, fine, let them, and you remind everyone that it was your administration that not only arrested the man behind the attempt on your life, but you also exposed his organisation and put his top teer people away as well, all this while you were in this so called weakened state. Now Keeler would be lucky to have a fraction of your energy, that's what you tell him, Mr President. (to CHUCK) Go ahead Chuck.
DAVID PALMER: His mum called him the timid brother.
(WAYNE PALMER laughs. ANNE walks into the room.)
DAVID PALMER: Ah, there's my doctor. How are you? ANNE: Mr President.
MAN: Alright everyone, let's break for a few minutes please.
ANNE: I'm fine. (to WAYNE PALMER) How's he been?
WAYNE PALMER: Seems a little tired.
DAVID PALMER: I'm not tired, I'm just a little jet-lagged.
ANNE: How's this going?
DAVID PALMER: I'm definitely winning the run.
(ANNE observes DAVID PALMER'S right hand. She then checks his blood pressure.)
ANNE: One thirty over eighty.
(WAYNE PLAMER'S mobile phone rings. He answered it and walks away.)
ANNE: How tired?
DABID PALMER: I'm fine.
ANNE: You know me haven't done a work up on you in a while and I…
DAVID PALMER: No, no, no, no, no tests. You start looking for something and you don't stop until you find it. I'm fine Anne.
ANNE: Ok, but when you get back to DC I want you to have a complete physical, doctors orders.
DAVID PALMER (sighing): Yes, ma'am.
(WAYNE PALMER walks back up to DAVID PALMER and ANNE.)
WAYNE PALMER: Anne, I need him alone for a minute.
ANNE: He's all yours.
(ANNE walks away.)
DAVID PALMER: What is it?
WAYNE PALMER: I just received a very disturbing phone call from Health Services. It seems they found a body here in Los Angeles that’s been infected with an extremely contagious and deadly virus. Now there's concerns that it's not just a random occurrence.
DAVID PALMER: Meaning what?
WAYNE PALMER: Meaning CTU is looking at the possibility that this could be a criminal action.
DAVID PALMER: Criminal action? Based on this one death?
WAYNE PALMER: I don't know the details David, but it has to do with the circumstances in which the body was found.
DAVID PALMER: Keep you eye on this one.
WAYNE PALMER: Ok.
MAN: Can we go to down to question number seven about Homeland Security?
MAN 2: Yes sir.
INT. CTU - JACK BAUER'S OFFICE
(JACK BAUER is typing on his computer. He looks at the screen, sighs and dials CHLOE O'BRIAN'S phone number.)
JACK BAUER: Chloe?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Yes?
JACK BAUER: Where are the transcripts of Salazar and the DA?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: I sent them to your system, it's in your directory.
JACK BAUER: Yeah well I didn't want it in my directory, I want it stored with the rest of the files from Salazar.
CHLOE O'BRIAN Ok, I'll do it.
(JACK BAUER walks out of his office and up to CHLOE O'BRIAN'S desk.)
JACK BAUER: Chloe listen to me, if you can't start getting things right the first time, just let me know cos I can get someone else who can.
CHLOE O'BRIAN: I did do it right, if you wanted it saved with the other files you should have said so, that isn't standard so I wouldn't think of doing that way, would I?
JACK BAUER (raising his voice): Just do it that way from now on! Ok? CHLOE O'BRIAN: I can't read minds Jack, you're just gonna have to spell it out for me otherwise this relationship…
JACK BAUER (shouting): Forget it Chloe just do it now.
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Fine.
(CHLOE O'BRIAN walks out of JACK BAUER'S office. CHASE EDMUNDS walks in to the office and closes the door behind him.)
CHASE EDMUNDS: Hey Jack.
JACK BAUER: What?
CHASE EDMUNDS: What was that all about?
JACK BAUER: I need you to replace Chloe for me.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Replace her? She's the best analyst we got.
JACK BAUER: No, she's not, she's slow.
CHASE EDMUNDS: She's not slow, I mean she may be a little weird, but, uh, she knows her stuff. (Pause) You look like hell.
JACK BAUER: What did you just say to me?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Were on an active protocol ok? I need to know if you're up for it or not.
JACK BAUER: I like working with you Chase, you're a nice kid, but don't you ever come into my office and talk to me like that again, do you understand me?
CHASE EDMUNDS: I'm just saying you're on edge. Ok, I mean come on man you're about to fire Chloe for no reason.
(JACK BAUER dials CHLOE O'BRAIN'S phone number.)
JACK BAUER: Chloe?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Yes?
JACK BAUER: I'm sorry I took your head off. I was just having a bad morning ok?
CHLOE O'BRIAN: Thanks.
JACK BAUER: Yeah.
(JACK BAUER hangs up.)
JACK BAUER (to CHASE EDMUNDS): You happy?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Look Jack, there's on more thing I've gotta talk to you about.
(The phone rings. JACK BAUER picks it up.)
JACK BAUER: This is Bauer.
(A MAN on the other end of the lines says something.)
JACK BAUER: Ok, we'll be right down.
(JACK BAUER hangs up the phone.)
JACK BAUER: We got something on Salazar. What do you wanna tell me?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Nothing, it'll hold.
JACK BAUER: Good.
(JACK BAUER walks out of his office.)
INT. CTU - MAIN FLOOR
(MICHELLE SESSLER is talking to a group of CTU workers.)
MICHELLES DESSLER: So, in order to plug any possible security breaches, we're doing date checks from now on. Break your lobs into eight hour intervals…
(JACK BAUER walks down the stairs onto CTU'S MAIN FLOOR, followed by CHASE EDMUNDS.)
KIM BUAER: Did you tell him?
CHASE EDMUNDS: No, there's a lot going on, I know it'll happen, I promise.
(JACK BAUER and CHASE EDMUNDS walk into the CTU CONFERENCE ROOM.)
TONY ALMEIDA: an anonymous phone call just came into the FBI about ten minutes ago. They're getting ready to stream it to us right now.
CHASE EDMUNDS: Did you hear it?
TONY ALMEIDA: Yeah.
ADAM: Ok, it's ready.
TONY ALMEIDA: Bring it up.
SCRAMBLED VOICE: By now you've received our package and realised we're in possession of a type three pulmonary immunal virus. Listen very carefully to these instructions: our demand is very simple, we want the release of Ramon Salazar in the next six hours. If you refuse to comply, the virus will be unleashed to the general population. As your experts will tell you, you will not have time to stop it's spread, detail of Ramon's delivery will follow.
ADAM: That's it.
JACK BAUER: Do we know where the phone call originated from?
ADAM: We don't know yet, it came out of a scrambled satellite signal, we're trying to narrow it down.
TONY ALMEIDA: Jack, you know Salazar better than anyone else here, who do you think we're dealing with?
JACK BAUER: Without a doubt his brother. Hector was next in command, he went underground the second Ramon was taken into custody. Now look, I know for a fact that the Salazars own multiple properties in South America and Mexico registered under dummy corporations. Unfortunately right now the Mexican government are saying they can't locate them. So we're gonna have to throw out a pretty large net to try and trace the origin of that call.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright, well we're gonna.
JACK BAUER: Ok. How are we doing with the ID on the dead body?
TONY ALMEIDA: Michelle's running the DNA.
JACK BAUER: Ok, what about prints and dental?
ADAM: No teeth, no fingertips.
JACK BAUER: Ok look, we need this ID, it's the only hook we've got into their operation.
TONY ALMEIDA: What about questioning Salazar?
JACK BAUER: Complete waste of time. This is a man without vulnerability. He doesn't respond to physical interrogation, and he doesn't care about another living soul, including his own children.
(MICHELLE DESSLER calls from CTU'S MAIN FLOOR.)
MICHELLE DESSLER: Tony? We've a match on John Doe.
(JACK BAUER, CHASE EDMUNDS and TONY ALMEIDA walk onto CTU'S MAIN FLOOR.)
TONY ALMEIDA: What you got?
MICHELLE DESSLER: The dead body is a David Goss, he's a street dealer in East LA, also an informant. Looks like he flipped sides so many times DEA stopped working him over a year ago.
JACK BAUER: Do we have a last known address?
MICHELLE DESSLER: We're working on it.
JACK BAUER: Ok, we're gonna need to know who infected Goss. You're gonna have to work up a list of everybody who's been involved in his life over the last week.
TONY ALMEIDA: Alright, we'll pull together everything we can get our hands on.
JACK BAUER: Ok, but work it from the other side as well. Go through Salazar's network, see if you can find the supplier who sold to Goss. Good work. Chase, come with me, let's see if anything's come in on Hector.
EXT. SOMEWHERE IN LOS NIEVES, NORTHERN MEXICO
(HECTOR SALAZAR and CLAUDIA drive to a place where a truck is tipping what seem to be bodies into a large hole. They both get out of the car.)
HECTOR SALZAR (in Spanish): What is this?
CLAUDIA'S DAD (in Spanish): The ones we didn't use.
HECTOR SALAZAR (in Spanish): And this won't affect my soil?
CLAUDIA'S DAD (in Spanish): No, the soil will be fine.
(The bodies are tipped into the hoe. CLAUDIA looks disgusted and turns away. HECTOR SALAZAR orders the men to burn the bodies. They start pouring petrol into the hole. CLAUDIA and HECTOR SALAZAR climb back into the car.)
CLAUDIA: Why do you have my father doing this kind of work for you? It's not his job.
HECTOR SALZAR: It is today.
(They drive away.)
INT. FEDERAL HOLDING FACILITY IN DOWNEY
(RAMON SALAZAR is walked out of his cell. ANNICON walks up to him.)
ANNICON: Why did you kill Shay? Take a look around Ramon, you're in a United States prison where your ass is going to rot until you're executed. You wanna improve your conditions here, you better start talking to me.
RAMON SALAZAR: What do you want to talk about?
ANNICON: Why did you kill your attorney?
RAMON SALAZAR: I didn't want him talking to you.
ANNICON: About what?
RAMON SALAZAR: About anything.
(ANNICON turns and starts to walk away.)
RAMON SALAZAR: It's eating at you isn't it? What am I up to? Come on Luis, you have me in chains, two tough guys waiting for a chance to beat me to a pulp. Do it Luis! See if you can beat it out of me. You are no fun.
(ANNICON walks away.)
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 01:44:40 to 01:44:46 before fading away.)
EXT. RANCH IN LOS NIEVES, NORTHERN MEXICO
(RAMON SALAZAR and CLAUDIA pull up outside his ranch. They get out of the car. CLAUDIA starts walking to the door.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Where are you going? Claudia? Claudia? Claudia! What's wrong?
CLAUDIA: My father is the ranch foreman. You promised me he wouldn't be involved in your other activities.
HECTOR SALAZAR: I pay your father three times the going rate. He can perform an extra task or two.
CLAUDIA: No, no, no. No. I told you when we came to live here that I didn't want him or my little brother to be exposed to your illegal business. You broke your word Hector. And that hurts me. It hurts.
HECTOR SALAZAR: I'm sorry Claudia, please, I make it up to you.
CLAUDIA: No.
HECTOR SALAZAR: I give your father some time off, an extra month pay.
CLAUDIA: That's your solution to every problem isn't it? Money.
(CLAUDIA walks away.)
HECTOR SALAZAR: Claudia… Claudia… (shouting) Claudia!
(HECTOR SALAZAR takes out his mobile phone and dials a number.)
GAEL: Yeah?
HECTOR SALAZAR: Have you made the call to the FBI?
GAEL: Yes I did.
HECTOR SALAZAR: And, uh, what about our boy?
GAEL (looking images from a security camera.): I'm watching him now.
HECTOR SALAZAR: Close.
GAEL: I will.
(They both hang up.)
EXT. THE POOL NEXT TO KYLE SINGER'S HOUSE
(KYLE and his friend TIM are sitting by the pool, talking.)
TIM: So what was it like to get knee deep in some fine do you wanna delve?
KYLE SINGER: Hot.
TIM: What do you mean?
KYLE SINGER: I mean I didn't go down there to get laid.
TIM: But you said…
KYLE SINGER: I know, I know, I know what I said. I just didn't wanna tell you in case something happened.
TIM: What's the big secret?
KYLE SINGER: You remember Zach Pocker from High School?
TIM: Sure. But didn't he get busted last year for dealing coke?
KYLE SINGER: Uh, yeah.
TIM: So what happened?
KYLE SINGER: He set me up with this guy down there.
TIM: What do you mean he set you up? How do you even know him?
KYLE SINGER: I know him, ok?
TIM: What are you into here man, are you selling dope?
KYLE SINGER: No. I'm not exactly selling it.
TIM: Then exactly what are you doing?
KYLE SINGER: This guy, he paid me five grand to bring some coke over the border. I did that last night. Today I drop it off I get another five.
TIM: You gotta be out of your mind.
KYLE SINGER: No, this is just this one time. Getting it over the border's the hard part, that's already done.
TIM: Why are you doing this?
KYLE SINGER: Dude, my mum's on analysis, my dad's out of a job, we're about to get evicted from this crappy apartment. Is that good enough for you?
TIM: Dude, you are seriously insane.
KYLE SINGER: Look Tim, I'm about to lake this drop later today, I'm just thinking maybe, maybe you and I we could go together
TIM: No forget it. No way.
KYLE SINGER: You'll wait in the car, I go in, I make the drop, I come back out, that's it. This is no big deal.
TIM: I'm not interested.
KYLE SINGER: Hey, think about it.
(TIM takes off his shirt and jumps into the pool.)
INT. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
(DAVID PALMER walks up to WAYNE PALMER and a group of other men.)
DAVID PALMER: Carry on. When did the FBI get this call?
WAYNE PALMER: About twenty minutes ago.
DAVID PALMER: And we don't know who we're dealing with?
WAYNE PALMER: Well, it was a scrambled voice on an open line. All we know is what he said. They want Salazar or they're going to release the virus.
DAVID PALMER: What's your take on this Wayne? Do we cancel the debate?
WAYNE PALMER: Well, so far, DOD, the Pentagon and CTU haven't recommended raising the alert level, but, they are discussing whether or not we should stay in Los Angeles.
AARON: Sir?
DAVID PALMER: Yes Aaron?
AARON: Doctor Packard's here, she's asked to see you.
DAVID PALMER: Tell her I'm busy please.
AARON: Yes, Mr President.
(AARON starts walking away.)
DAVID PALMER: Aaron wait, tell her I'll speak with her.
(AARON walks away.)
WAYNE PALMER: Do you really wanna do that right now?
DAVID PALMER: Yes Wayne, I do.
(DAVID PALMER walks away, ANNE enters the room and follows him.)
DAVID PALMER: Yes Anne?
ANNE (handing him a box of pills): I want you to start taking these, one in the morning and one before you go to bed. It'll help your energy.
DAVID PALMER: I told you I was fine.
ANNE: I know what you told me. You gonna trust your doctor or not? DAVID PALMER: Of course I am.
ANNE: So what's going on, you seem upset.
DAVID PALMER: Nothing, it's just gonna be another one of those days.
ANNE: What does that mean?
DAVID PALMER: I've got to get back.
ANNE: Ok.
DAVID PALMER: We'll talk later.
(They kiss. DAVID PALMER gets up and leaves the room.)
INT. CTU - FIRST FLOOR
(JACK BAUER is working at his computer.)
JACK BAUER: What is wrong with this system?
CHASE EDMUNDS: What?
JACK BAUER: The grid won't come up.
CHASE EDMUNDS: It's because you need to Control by the sound of it, you're still in navigation.
(CHASE EDMUNDS walks up to JACK BAUER'S computer and makes the grid appear.)
JACK BAUER: Thank you.
(JACK BAUER types something on the computer, an error message comes up.)
JACK BAUER (frustrated): Look, can you just patch it through to my office?
(JACK BAUER gets up and walks to his office. CHLOE O'BRIAN walks up to CHASE EDMUNDS.)
CHLOE O'BRIAN: What's his problem today?
CHASE EDMUNDS: Nothing.
(CHASE EDMUNDS walks into JACK BAUER'S office.)
JACK BAUER: This timeline doesn't make sense, it goes straight from December to February.
CHASE EDMUNDS: What are you trying to do Jack?
JACK BAUER: The same thing you should be trying to do, solve this problem.
CHASE EDMUNDS: That's not what I'm talking about. Listen Jack, I'm gonna be honest with you, I look up to you, I'd take a bullet for you if I had to but right now I'm gonna hold the mirror up. You were under with Salazar for six months. I know what they did to you, and I know what you did to yourself, you can't make that go away overnight. You think I didn't know?
JACK BAUER: You should mind you own business Chase.
CHASE EDMUNDS: All I'm trying to say, is that I'm here for you, but today is not the day to try and prove to everybody that you're better. It's about to hit the fan, you know that and I know that, so do what you gotta do man. Get your head straight, so we can do our work.
(JACK BAUER is shaken. He turns the lights out in his office, opens his locker, takes out a medi-kit and ties a tourniquet around his arm. He prepares a syringe full of heroin. As he's about to inject it into his arm, Kim buzzes on the intercom.)
KIM BAUER: Dad, you up there? Dad?
JACK BAUER: Yeah?
KIM BAUER: Can I come up? I need to talk to you about something.
JACK BAUER: Uh, not right now sweetheart, I'm in the middle of something.
KIM BAUER: Ok, well call me when you have a few minutes.
JACK BAUER: Ok.
(JACK BAUER, angry and shaking, empties the syringe onto the floor. He then throws it across the room. He rips the tourniquet off his arm and throws it to the floor.)
(The 24 timer comes up, and goes from 01:59:57 to 02:00:00 before fading away.)
