ETHEL: Hi Lucy... Here's the tray you wanted.
LUCY: Oh thanks doll.
ETHEL: Ohh... look at the Hors D'oeuvres. Boy are you fancy. (TRIES TO TOUCH THEM)
LUCY: Now stop that! I've got them arranged just right.
ETHEL: Who's coming?
LUCY: Some of Ricky's friends from Cuba.
ETHEL: Really? (STARTS TO TOUCH HORS D'OEUVRES)
LUCY: Yeah... STOP it! ...Gee you know Ethel we've been married all these years and this is the first time any of Ricky's friends visited us.
ETHEL: Hum... (TRIES TO TOUCH HORS D'OEUVRES)
LUCY: (SLAPS ETHEL'S HAND) ...and you know there all gonna go back and tell everybody what kind of a girl Ricky married. My entire Cuban reputation depends on how I handle myself this afternoon.
ETHEL: Ahh you'll do find. (PICKS UP HORS D'OEUVRES, LUCY PUSHES HAND BACK DOWN)
ETHEL: Who are these people?
LUCY: Well there members of a dance group that Ricky worked with in Cuba, and he's booked them into the club to start off their American tour.
ETHEL: Gee, that's exciting.
LUCY: How do you like my new dress?
ETHEL: Dreamy... They'll go back to Cuba and say-
LUCY: Oh! Here they come honey, drop this in the kitchen on your way out.
ETHEL: Yeah! ...Good luck.
LUCY: Thank you.
(ETHEL EXITS)
(RICKY AND FRIENDS ENTER)
RICKY: Lucy
LUCY: Hello
RICKY: (INTRODUCES FRIENDS TO LUCY IN SPANISH)
LUCY: How do you do?
RICKY: Carlos, Maria...
LUCY: How do you do?
RICKY: Lucy...
LUCY: Can I get your coat?
RICKY: (SPEAKS TO FRIENDS IN SPANISH) ...Eh, Lucy? Did Fred bring the wine?
LUCY: Wine?
RICKY: Yeah I told him to bring two special bottles of wine.
LUCY: Honey I haven't seen it.
RICKY: Oh I hope he didn't forget... (TO FRIENDS) I'll be right back.
(RICKY EXITS)
LUCY: Ha, well its certainly is nice to meet some of Ricky's friends from Cuba after all these years (LAUGHS)
(RICKY'S FRIENDS SMILE AT LUCY)
LUCY: I'll bet you wondered what I look like (LAUGHS)
(RICKY'S FRIENDS SMILE AT LUCY)
LUCY: Uh what kind of a girl did you think Ricky would marry?
(RICKY'S FRIENDS LOOK TOWARDS EACH OTHER)
LUCY: Ah no don't tell me. I shouldn't have asked that (LAUGHS) Ah, how do you like the apartment? I decorated it myself. I, I think it has sort of a homey atmosphere don't you think so?
(RICKY'S FRIENDS LAUGH AND NOD THEIR HEADS)
LUCY: (LAUGHS) Oh would you have an Hors D'oeuvre? I made them myself.
(MARIA AND CARLOS TAKE SOME)
MARIA: Oh Gracias
CARLOS: Mucho Gracias
LUCY: Uh Ricky told me all about your dancing group and what a success it was in Cuba. Ah, where do you think you'll go from here?
(RICKY'S FRIENDS LOOK TOWARDS EACH OTHER)
LUCY: Do you know where you'll go from here?
(RICKY'S FRIENDS GET BOOK OUT)
CARLOS: We do not.
LUCY: Wedonot? Sounds like someplace in Arkansas.
(RICKY'S FRIENDS LOOK BACK IN BOOK)
CARLOS: Oh, we do not... speak English.
LUCY: Oh! Oh you don't speak English. Oh well (LAUGHS) ... WELL! Um will you have another Hors D'oeuvre?
CARLOS: Si Gracias.
MARIA: No Gracias.
LUCY: Uh... would you like a drink?
CARLOS: Como?
LUCY: Oh I forgot ah, would you liko el drinko (MOTIONS DRINKING) ... EL DRINKO!
(RICKY ENTERS)

RICKY: I'm sorry I took so long honey... did you have a nice talk?

RICKY: Oh... I forgot to tell you, Carlos and Maria don't speak in English.
LUCY: (CHUCKLES) Uh yes... I sensed that while you we're gone.
RICKY: Well I'm back now.
(CARLOS SPEAKS TO RICKY IN SPANISH)
(MARIA REPLIES)
RICKY: Ah muchas gracias, muchas gracias. They want me to tell you that ah there very happy to meet you.
LUCY: Oh! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
RICKY: (SERVES DRINKS TO MARIA AND LUCY SPEAKING IN SPANISH) Lucy? (SPEAKS TO CARLOS IN SPANISH WHILE SERVING DRINK)
CARLOS: (MAKES TOAST IN SPANISH)
(MARIA AND RICKY FOLLOW TOAST IN SPANISH)
LUCY: Eh, Lehime.
(CARLOS COMPLEMENTS RICKY ON WINE)
RICKY: Muy bueno huh?
LUCY: Well, ITS CERTAINLY IS NICE TO MEET SOME OF RICKY'S FRIENDS FROM CUBA, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
(MARIA AND CARLOS LOOK TO RICKY)
RICKY: Uh (TRANSLATES IN SPANISH)
(MARIA AND CARLOS LOOK TO LUCY AND THANK HER)
LUCY: Uh, uh DID YOU HAVE A NICE BOAT TRIP UP HERE?
(MARIA AND CARLOS LOOK TO RICKY)
RICKY: Honey there not hard of hearing you know.
LUCY: Oh (LAUGHS) oh (GIGGLES) oh uh, did you have a nic... well honey you ask em' if they had a nice boat trip.
RICKY: Uh Lucy wants to know if you had a, OH fine! (LAUGHS)... (TRANSLATES IN SPANISH)
CARLOS: AH...(LOOKS TO LUCY AND SAYS ANSWER IN SPANISH)
RICKY: Uh the first day out was just beautiful.

LUCY: I have an idea my hair suffered in the translation (WALKS TO MARIA WITH WINE) Vino?

RICKY: Honey I'm sorry you didn't know what we we're talking about. We we're talking about Renita Pelez.
LUCY: Who?
RICKY: Renita Pelez, she'll be here any minute.
LUCY: Oh!
RICKY: Oh she's with the troop you know.

RICKY: ...and when I was in Cuba I used to do a number with her in which I played her father.
LUCY: Oh! Really?
RICKY: (LAUGHS) She was the cutest little thing you ever saw.

RICKY: So they we're telling me her you know her partner hadn't arrived in New York and they want me to dance with her tomorrow night at the opening.
LUCY: Well honey! I think you should. Go ahead.
RICKY: Well
LUCY: I'd love to see you and little Renita dance.
RICKY: Well honey I haven't done that kind of stuff in a long time.
LUCY: Oh now nonsense besides, it would help the good neighbor policy.
RICKY: (LAUGHS)

(MARIA AND CARLOS GET EXITED AND TALK TO RICKY)
(DOOR BELL RINGS)
(LUCY ANSWERS DOOR)

GUEST: Good evening.

GUEST: (SEES RICKY) Ricky! (RUNS TO HIM)
(MARIA AND CARLOS CHEER)

(MARIA SAYS SOMETHING TO RICKY IN SPANISH)
(RICKY REPLIES TO MARIA)
RICKY: Renita come here. I want you to meet my wife. Eh, Lucy? This is Renita. Renita? This is my wife Lucy.
RENITA: How do you do?
LUCY: How do you do.
RENITA: It is so exiting. I haven't seen Ricky since I was a little girl.
LUCY: Yeah... that's what he told me.
RENITA: And, and I can't get over how how he's developed.
LUCY: Yeah... you've done pretty well yourself.

(CARLOS CALLS FOR RENITA)

LUCY: Ricky I, I think you right dear about not doing that dance.
RICKY: Oh no honey I think you are right, I think I ought to do it. As you said I think it will help the good neighbor policy.
LUCY: Yeah well that policy just lapsed.
(RENITA RUNS TO RICKY)
RENITA: Ricky! They just told me you are going to dance with me tonight.
RICKY: Si!
RENITA: Won't that be fun!
RICKY: Yeah!
RENITA: (HUGS RICKY) Ahhh...!
(NEW SCENE - LIVING ROOM)
(LUCY SITTING AT DESK WRITING)
(ETHEL AND FRED ENTER)
ETHEL: Hi Lucy.
LUCY: Hi.
ETHEL: We came up to collect the rent.
LUCY: Ok girl, here it is.
ETHEL: Thanks.
FRED: Ok let's go.
ETHEL: Relax speedy.
FRED: Come on we got two more apartments to make now let's go.
ETHEL: Wait just a minute, how did your meeting with Ricky's friends go?
FRED: We got two more apartments to make. I said lets go!
LUCY: Oh now Fred I'm sorry your in such a hurry. I kinda wanted to ask your advice about a sexy Cuban girl that was here last night.
FRED: Come on... Sexy Cuban gal? What about the sexy Cuban gal?
ETHEL: Push your eyes back in your head fatso... Come on tell me what happened.
LUCY: Well it seems when this girl - Renita, was a child she and Ricky used to dance together. She was much younger than he was.
ETHEL: Yeah, what happened?
LUCY: Well somehow she caught up with em'
ETHEL: So?
LUCY: So now her partner hadn't arrived and they want Ricky to dance with her tonight.
ETHEL: So...?
LUCY: SO...so... you haven't seen Renita. I'd just like to get a load of that dance their doing that's all.
FRED: Why don't you go to rehearsal?
LUCY: Oh I cant do that. I'm not going down there and have Ricky thinking I'm jealous and spying on em'.
FRED: Well I could go watch and then report to ya
ETHEL: Oh no you couldn't... I could go.
LUCY: No that's no good.
FRED: Well you know in the afternoon down at that club there's always a couple of those ah scrub woman hanging around.
ETHEL: Scrub woman...?
LUCY: Scrub woman!
(NEW SCENE - TROPICANA)
(RICKY REHEARSING WITH BAND)
RICKY: Alright hold it, hold it hold it. Listen in, in that part of the brass, lets bite em' off a little more. Let's go. (SINGS)... Alright? Now let's hear it, just the brass. Give ya two. A one, a two.
(BRASS SECTION SINGS RICKY'S CHANGE RATHER THAN PLAYING)
RICKY: Everybody's a comic, alright come on you know what I mean, right from the top now. Alright here we go.
(ORCHESTRA STARTS)
(RICKY JUMPS IN SINGING)
(RENITA ENTERS DANCING)

(LUCY AND ETHEL ENTERS AS A JANITOR AND STARTS MOPPING STAGE)

RENITA: What's the matter with them?
RICKY: I don't know what's the matter with them. That's the way the rumba affects people. Even at their age.
(CARLOS APPLAUDS RICKY)
RICKY: Gracias.
(MARIA ENTERS TALKING TO RENITA AND GIVES HER A LETTER)
(CARLOS SAYS SOMETHING IN SPANISH)
RENITA: Oh it is! It's from Ramón he's in New York. He's going to be here this afternoon!
RICKY: Oh good now you can do the number with him.
RENITA: Oh no Ricky.
RICKY: Oh yes honey I'm not as good as shape as I used to be. Besides I'd like to see you do that native wedding dance you we're telling me about huh.
RENITA: Alright. I'll get the music. It's in my dressing room.
RICKY: Now honey I'll get it (STANDS UP BREATHS A FEW TIMES AND SITS) ...you get it.
(WHOLE BAND LAUGHS)
RICKY: No cracks from you characters.
(NEW SCENE - LIVING ROOM)
(LUCY AND RENITA SITTING ON COUCH)
LUCY: Uh, wo, would you care from some cookies Renita dear?
RENITA: No gracias. It's been lovely visiting with you though Lucy. Now I must really hurry down to the club, I have to get ready for the opening you know.
LUCY: Oh well Renita its been just wonderful getting to know you.
(ETHEL ENTERS)
ETHEL: Lucy? Oh I'm sorry I didn't you know you had company.
LUCY: That's alright Ethel. Renita, this is Ethel Mertz.
(BOTH SAY "HOW DO YOU DO")
RENITA: Well you don't mind if I go freshen up a bit do you?
LUCY: Oh no not a bit. Right in through there dear. Rick in through the bedroom.
RENITA: Thank you.
(RENITA EXITS)
LUCY: Yeah, ohh isn't she cute?
ETHEL: Lucy I don't trust you being so palsy walsy with her what ya planning to do?
LUCY: Oh you're so smart... Listen I'm gonna do that "Lady in Red" number with Ricky tonight if it's the last thing I do. Wait'll you see the beautiful costume I have.
ETHEL: Oh now Lucy. This is just silly. Why don't you let her do the dance with em' you don't even know the steps.
LUCY: Listen a Rumba is a Rumba you just wiggle your hips and jump up and down.
ETHEL: What about her?
LUCY: I have plans.
(RENITA ENTERS)
RENITA: Good bye Lucy.
LUCY: Oh darling I'll call you a cab, pardon me Ethel.
RENITA: No no that's o, I will take a subway.
LUCY: No no no I wouldn't hear of it. Nonsense now sit down, I'll call a cab. (DIALS NUMBER)
ETHEL: (TO RENITA) Como Esta...
RENITA: Ahh! (STARTS SPEAKING SPANISH)
ETHEL: ...we
LUCY: (TO PHONE) Hello? Hello. I'd like you to send a cab to 623 East 68th Street, Right away please apartment 4A yes. Thank you. (HANGS UP) The cab will me right over.
RENITA: Thank you.
(DOOR BELL RINGS)
(FRED'S AT DOOR DRESSED AS A CAB DRIVER)
FRED: Did you call a cab lady?
LUCY: Well yes I did.
FRED: I'd a been here sooner only but ah traffic was against me.
RENITA: Good bye Mrs. Mertz.
LUCY: Uh now cabby. I want you to take very good care of this little lady. I want you to take er' to the Tropicana Club.
FRED: Don't you worry lady. I know a shortcut through uh Philadelphia.
RENITA: Adios Lucy.
LUCY: Adios.
FRED: Good bye lady.
LUCY: Adios.
(FRED AND RENITA EXIT)

(NEW SCENE - TROPICANA)
(CARLOS AND MARIA BOW AND EXIT)
RICKY: Thank you. Thank you very much Carlos and Maria. Thank you ladies and Gentleman. I'm ah indeed very happy that you liked those wonderful people because they we're the ones that gave me my start in show business and now for the highlight of the evening I'd like to introduce to you Ramón and Renita doing their version of the African Wedding Dance. So now we take you to (LIGHTS FADE) ...AFRICA! (RICKY HAS AFRICAN MASK ON AND LIGHTS COME BACK ON) ... Just me... I only wanted to get you into the mood. You know on the night of the full moon the high Priest goes through a jungle clearing and sings a song of love, and then follows the courtship dance in which the bride's groom tries to impress his bride to be with his fierceness and strength. So now let's pretend that this is a jungle clearing, there is a full moon, and the high Priest is singing his song (RICKY CUES ORCHESTRA)
